Madeline Davern

 

Hello, my name is Madeline Abbey Davern, and I am a Senior at Longwood University with a major of Communications and a concentration in Organizational studies and public relations. I recently just switched from the Business school, with a concentration in Finance, over to the Comm department. Choosing what I want to focus my life on was hard for me, I was indecisive about it and nervous that I would pick the wrong career path. I have taken  a broad spectrum of classes at Longwood and
I finally have found my home. I am confident that Communications is my notch I have found within myself.

 

 

 

 I live in Richmond, Virginia, but how ever, as I like to call it, my "motherland" is England. I was born and raised there until I was 10 years old. My experience of moving to a new country at such a young age has caused me to develop and mature much quicker, not only this, but I have incredible social and communications skills that I gained from this personal experience.

 

Currently I work in a restaurant where communication is key. This job has taught me about the importance of communication within a team. Without communication between servers, managers, hosts, or the kitchen the restaurant would be failing. I also have learned a good deal of communication skills. When it comes to the food industry you see your handful of unhappy customers everyday. I have been informed and apply how to better communicate to them, fix their problems and make sure they stay satisfied. I have also had an internship with Capitol Securities Management Inc. This brokerage firm helped better my professional skills, using professional emailing, letter writting, and phone communication with the brokers. I took a lot of professional communications skills from this internship that I would have never learned from my restaurant job.
